1. Taper Your Ride Intensity

One of the biggest mistakes you can make in preparing for an event is pushing your body too hard without allowing proper time for recovery. You should be putting in your high intensity rides during the weeks before the event, with the last heavy workout being at least seven days before the race. Interviews with experienced riders show that a common training approach is to taper down the intensity of rides leading up to the race, so that their legs are fresh and ready to perform.

My personal approach is to get in a hard ride one week before race day where I really wear out my legs. During the next six days, I make sure to continue my typical two rides for the week but lower the intensity with each one. The Tuesday workout is not as strenuous as the weekend ride, and Thursday’s is essentially just to keep my legs fresh. This structure of race preparation allows for you to break down your leg muscles the week prior, but be out of recovery mode on race day. The hard ride will break down your leg muscles and build up endurance. This is supported by the two less intense rides during race week and allows your legs to be recovered and strengthened for the race. While this is a pretty simple overview of ride tapering, you will feel the results of this training method as soon as you start the race.

2. Get More Sleep

Ride tapering is an important strategy to ensure your legs are recovered and ready to perform, but this cannot be done without proper rest. Your body recovers most while you are sleeping, so make sure to get at least eight hours of sleep per night in the week before your race.
